MTN Reduces Data Price by 25% - 50%

Data Reduction

Godfrey Motsa, the CEO of MTN South Africa on Friday announced an intended reduction in the price of data effective from the 15th of April, 2020.

MTN said in a statement that "there were three main areas of focus for the company in reducing prices: prepaid bundles, lifeline data and the zero-rating of data for public benefit service websites; for prepaid data, the price of monthly bundles of 1GB and below would be reduced by between 25 and 50%, with the 1GB price being slashed by 33%"

I commend MTN South Africa for the noble intention but however, pray and hope it would be implemented with immediate affect not just in SA but other countries that use MTN's communication services too. I also urge other Telecom firms to emulate this, even if it's as a CSR in this time when the whole world is in dire need of the internet as the fastest way to disseminate information.

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic requires all to stay abreast with information and the cost of data sort of shuts out the average person from accessing this vital information.

Apart from the intended reduction, MTN South Africa already offers zero-rated access to some websites, including schools and universities, and plans to extend these websites to include public health, public universities, vocational colleges, educational resources and employment sites with plans to offer a monthly 500MB free data access service to these websites.

It is only ideal that other Telecommunications companies extend good gestures as this to grant ease of access to information and educational resources over the internet to all and sundry.
